Bernadette J. Richards, Mark Taylor, Susannah Sage Jacobson
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This timely book emphasizes the importance of regulation in enabling and channelling innovation at a time when technology is increasingly embedded in healthcare. It considers the adequacy of current regulatory approaches, identifying apparent gaps, risks and liabilities, and discusses how these might be collectively addressed. The authors present possible solutions that balance the protection and promotion of public trust in healthcare against enabling technological progress and disruptive innovation. Offering both a theoretical and practical approach to challenges at the intersection of healthcare, law and technology, this thought-provoking book explores broad questions of regulation and innovation before analysing contextual applications of these topics. It moves from a wide-ranging consideration of the polycentric and changing nature of health regulation through to a more specific examination of topics including patient consent, the role of device representatives, privacy, artificial intelligence and big data. Providing an international perspective, Technology, Innovation and Healthcare will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of health law, innovation, technology law, law and development and law and society. It will also be of benefit to lawyers, healthcare professionals, technology developers and policy makers, seeking to better integrate technology with healthcare.

Henry Explores the Jungle (Hardcover): Mark Taylor Henry Explores the Jungle (Hardcover)
Mark Taylor; Illustrated by Graham Booth
R547 R464 Discovery Miles 4 640 Save R83 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1968, Henry and Angus are back for another adventure

Once Henry and his dog, Laird Angus McAngus (Angus for short), had gone hunting for bear. But that was in winter. Now it was summer and time to explore the jungle.

"We may find a tiger," Henry told his mother.

"Well, don't get eaten," his mother said, handing him his lunch.

It was harder exploring the jungle than Henry had thought it would be. The grass was so high he could hardly see over it, and not all of the inhabitants were friendly.

Still, explorers are brave; when they find a tiger, they know just what to do. It is such moments of triumph that make exploring worthwhile, and make reading about it almost as good.

The Theatre and its Double: Mark Taylor-Batty The Theatre and its Double
Mark Taylor-Batty; Antonin Artaud; Edited by Mark Taylor-Batty
R597 Discovery Miles 5 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In The Theatre and Its Double, first published in 1938, Antonin Artaud puts forward his radical theories on drama and theatre, which he saw as being stifled by conservatism and a lack of experimentation. Containing the famous manifestos of the ‘Theatre of Cruelty’, this collection of essays analyses the underlying impulses of performance, provides suggestions on a physical-training method for actors, and features a long appreciation of the expressive values of Eastern dance drama. This new English translation of Artaud's canonical text by Mark Taylor-Batty retains the idiosyncratic nature of the author's writing, communicating its fervour and ambition, while achieving a much-needed clarity. Through doing so, it facilitates a fuller appreciation of Artaud’s artistic objectives and the original context in which they grew, aided by a newly translated set of his notes and drafts, and a selection of letters to his publisher, friends and associates concerning the book's genesis and the evolution of the concept of a ‘Theatre of Cruelty’. The commentary further contextualizes this material within Artaud’s broader oeuvre, from his collaboration with the Surrealist group through to his plans to stage his own adaptation of Percy Shelley’s Les Cenci in 1935. A welcome addition to any theatre-lover's or student's bookshelf, this translation of Artaud’s classic text offers clear and faithful insights into Artaud's theatre.

Domesticity Under Siege - Threatened Spaces of the Modern Home (Hardcover): Mark Taylor, Georgina Downey, Terry Meade Domesticity Under Siege - Threatened Spaces of the Modern Home (Hardcover)
Mark Taylor, Georgina Downey, Terry Meade
R2,814 Discovery Miles 28 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Theories of the domestic stemming from the 19th century have focused on the home as a refuge and place of repose for the family, a nurturing environment for children and a safe place for visitors. Under this conception, domestic space is positioned as nurturing and private, a refuge and place of retreat which gave rise to theories of 'home as haven'. While, arguably, some social conditions might suggest this is the case, Domesticity Under Siege exposes a different world, one in which the boundaries of nurturing domesticity collide with both outside and inside agents. Whether these agents are external military forces, psychological trauma or familial violence, they re-position meta-narratives of domesticity, not through identity politics or specialized subgroup experience, but relative to the actions of the world around an inhabited domain. That is, when home is constituted as a private realm, a place where individuals or groups can reside in 'safety and comfort', it is argued as a place in which the individual exercises control or power. However, there are many occasions when forces act upon the home and threaten aspects of safety and comfort, often through such things as ruination, violence, mortality, and infestation. Organised around four thematic sections, 'Microbes, Animals and Insects', 'Human Agents', Wars and Disasters as Agents' and 'Hauntings, Eeriness and the Uncanny', chapters provide a range of approaches to the home which challenge notions of 'haven' and reflect major causes that have played an important role in undermining the modern home. Examples and case studies explore the domestic screen, hoarding, hauntings, violence and imprisonment in the home, wartime interior art, the Hanover Merzbau and Wolfgang Staudte's 1946 film Die Moerder sind unter uns ('The Murderers are Among Us').

Culture is Bad for You - Inequality in the Cultural and Creative Industries (Paperback): Orian Brook, Dave O'Brien, Mark... Culture is Bad for You - Inequality in the Cultural and Creative Industries (Paperback)
Orian Brook, Dave O'Brien, Mark Taylor
R376 Discovery Miles 3 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Culture will keep you fit and healthy. Culture will bring communities together. Culture will improve your education. This is the message from governments and arts organisations across the country; however, this book explains why we need to be cautious about culture. Offering a powerful call to transform the cultural and creative industries, Culture is bad for you examines the intersections between race, class, and gender in the mechanisms of exclusion in cultural occupations. Exclusion from culture begins at an early age, the authors argue, and despite claims by cultural institutions and businesses to hire talented and hardworking individuals, women, people of colour, and those from working class backgrounds are systematically disbarred. While the inequalities that characterise both workforce and audience remain unaddressed, the positive contribution culture makes to society can never be fully realised. -- .

Making Sense of Data in the Media (Paperback): Andrew Bell, Todd Hartman, Aneta Piekut, Alasdair Rae, Mark Taylor Making Sense of Data in the Media (Paperback)
Andrew Bell, Todd Hartman, Aneta Piekut, Alasdair Rae, Mark Taylor
R897 Discovery Miles 8 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The amount of data produced, captured and transmitted through the media has never been greater. But for this data to be useful, it needs to be properly understood and claims made about or with data need to be properly scrutinized. Through a series of examples of statistics in the media, this book shows you how to critically assess the presentation of data in the media, to identify what is significant and to sort verifiable conclusions from misleading claims. How accurate are polls, and how should we know? How should league tables be read? Are numbers presented as 'large' really as big as they may seem at first glance? By answering these questions and more, readers will learn a number of statistical concepts central to many undergraduate social science statistics courses. By tying them in to real life examples, the importance and relevance of these concepts comes to life. As such, this book does more than teaches techniques needed for a statistics course; it teaches you life skills that we need to use every single day.
